Is the website down,

We request the site from our server and tell you what came back: up or down, how long it took, where it redirected, and how long its security certificate has left.
What this checks
We send a request to the site from our own server, follow any redirects, and report what came back: the status code, how long the first byte and the whole response took, and where it ended up. For https sites we also read the security certificate, because an expired certificate takes a site down for every visitor just as surely as a crashed server.
Down for everyone, or just for you?
If the site answers here but not in your browser, the problem is usually between you and it: your connection, a DNS cache, a firewall or a VPN. Try another network, or clear your DNS cache. If it is down here too, it is down for everyone, and the reason above says where to start.

If this check says it is up, it is up for the internet at large, and the problem is likely your connection, DNS or network. If it says down, it is down for everyone.
What does a 503 or 502 error mean?
503 means the server is overloaded or in maintenance. 502 and 504 mean a gateway, often a CDN or load balancer, could not get an answer from the server behind it.
Why does it say "up, with a problem"?
The server answered, but not with the page: a 404 means the address does not exist, a 403 means the server refused the request, which some sites do to automated checks.
